British Triathlon statement on disqualification of Harry Wiltshire:

Harry Wiltshire was disqualified during the elite men's race at the 2011 ETU European Championships in Pontevedra (25 June 2011).

British Triathlon has been advised by ITU that he was disqualified under point 3.3.a.(i), Appendix L: 5,6,7 of the ITU competition rules. This relates to blocking of another athlete during the swim and the swim exit.

British Triathlon is committed to promoting fair play and ethical sporting conduct and following the ITU review of the evidence, will continue to support ITU in maintaining a safe and fair field of play for all athletes.

Given the huge of comments, opinions, messages received etc ... about the controversy generated by the action of Harry Whiltshire in swimming, I have to talk about it and I would like to explain what happened.

Many people asked me if I think this was a deliberate tactic of the British team. Obviously I cannot know it. My personal opinion is not, emphatically. Both Alistair and Jonathan are good enough to win races in a fair behaviour, as they always did. I consider them great champions and I have great respect for them. Also, I have nothing against the British federation or anyone else who has not directly caused this situation. I have many friends in the British team. They showed me that they are not only great athletes but great guys as well. Many of them have given me their support and I thank them for their words. Like all other athletes who condemn such actions.

With this explanation, from my part I consider this situation ended. My concern right now is recover my stomach making the proper tests in order to find out the cause of the problem, and focus on the next big race in Hamburg on July 16th. I love this sport and I love racing, so my mind is focused on that.

Nicht dass ich Mitleid hätte, aber bestraft gehört eigentlich die britische Teamleitung.

Es ist doch gar nicht vorstellbar, dass wiltshire auf eigene Rechnung gehandelt hat, sondern er musste schlicht und einfach eine Teamorder umsetzen.

Naja ... nicht so leicht zu beweisen, oder ?
Und wie sollte dann die "Bestrafung der Teamleitung" aussehen ?
Ich finde den Ansatz immer noch interessant, bei (extrem) unsportlichen Verhalten unter Umständen das ganze Team zur Verantwortung zu ziehen ...

6 Monate Pause für einen Wasserträger, von denen 4 Monate in die Saison- und Wettkampfpause fallen in denen im Triathlon ohnehin nur trainiert wird.
Der Abschreckungseffekt hält sich in Grenzen.

Ja, ist nicht immer leicht zu unterscheiden ob es Taktik oder Betrug war. Aber ich denke eine gewisse Strafe ist da schon okey, denn es sah ja wirklich so aus las wäre das kein Zufall gewesen und so was ist sicher nicht in Ordnung!

update:

offensichtlich hatte dirty harry tatsächlich die glorreiche idee, gegen die sperre einspruch zu erheben und vor den CAS zu ziehen. der einspruch wurde ihm aber leider um die ohren gehauen, die sperre war und ist gerechtfertigt, und nun muss er auch noch 2.500 SFR an die ITU abdrücken für die verhandlungskosten...
