Die Amis... (obwohl Dev, Gruender der 100/100 eigentlich Canuck ist)
"Guys, with well over 300 people on this challenge, we can expect there to be a full cross section of what we see at racing. At races, some people get momentarily stuck in the draft zone out of T1 due to congestion and make an effort to race clean, later in the race, there are those that blatantly draft, those that race clean at 5 bike lengths back to get full benefit from the rules and those that fall 10 lengths back on the moral high ground to accept no benefit at all...rules or no rules.
We also see in racing that the moment people hear the moto things start to break up. When Jimmy's boys dissappear, things bunch up again.
While we can't get Jimmy to chase all you guys around the world on your various runs, there are enough people on this challenge to "out you" if your totals and submissions are "padded". If your training is substantially out of line with past race results, you might get some smack. If you enter workouts before a certain date has come, there will be people that jump on ya. If you are foolish enough to do the same run with your training partner and you enter more distance or time than him, chances are you will be outed.
Bottom line, is that just like in racing, we do this for ourselves....cutting corners on the swim course, sitting 2 bike lengths back and taking outside assistance are only habits on race day that are reinforced with slippery behavior on a repeated basis daily in training. I tell the kids that I coach that good athletes are the ones that go the extra mile when the coach is not looking....for this thing, no one is looking...you must answer for yourself. So aside from the training value, here is an opportunity to reinforce ethical training behavior daily for 100 days.
I'll admit that whenever there is a competition, just like everyone else, I am inclined to push the limits of the rules to the benefit of the fastest time, but I try not to cross the line into the red zone. So for example, this morning, I wanted to put 13K of running up on "the board" and I had to do an extra run around the block to feel right about putting that up...no rounding up 12.5K to 13 cause I have to live with myself!!!!
There, I said, it...but I had to cause at Ironman Canada there was actually a guy who introduced himself to me off ST and then goes on to say that his mirror was great cause he could see when the marshals are coming!!! While I am concerned about the overall ethic in triathlons, I am hoping that all of us can use this to practice good ethics and also I ask each of you to keep your training partners "honest".
Just like drafting in races, the best offence towards a clean racing world is if there is general peer pressure towards those pushing the ethical line!
Bottom line is that if guys cheat on this challenge where all that we are fighting for is entries in a log, what will they do when there are Kona slots on the line at NAS races????
OK RANT OFF.
