I would never rule out doing a triathlon, but I wouldn't do it as a pro. If I did it, it would be the same approach as I'm taking for the marathon. If I finished New York City in three hours, that's fine, and if I finished an Olympic-distance triathlon in 2:30 or something like that, and I'd be happy.

Armstrong entered the triathlon world at an early age, and by the time he was thirteen his trophy case already dislplayed an IronKids Triathlon victory. He became a professional triathlete at age sixteen. Two years later he was national sprint course triathlon champion. His athletic talent was obvious his sport of choice was not. In 1991 Lance won the American Amateur Cycling Championship. And the rest is history. The question now is whether he will return to his roots.
Many professional cyclists have attempted the Kona Ironman- John Howard (1981; 9:38:29 finish - bike 5:03:29), Kai Hundertmarck (2007; 8:53:03 finish - bike 4:32:41), Karin Thuerig (2003; 9:26:28 finish - bike 4:50:41) and, most recently, Laurent Jalabert (2007; 9:19:58 finish - bike 4:45:49). While Howard did win in 1981 and Thuerig did find success at other Ironman races (1st place at Ironman France, Zurich, Lanzarote, and 70.3 Monaco) the highest she ever placed in Kona was 69th in 2003. Jalabert placed 76th in his 2007 Kona debut while Hundertmarck fared a bit better, coming in 16th in 2004. Yet, despite their suspected domination in the bike, the best time above would barely creep into the top five pro bike splits in the 2008 Ironman World Championship.
