TO ALL BIKE RACERS: If you see someone laying at the side of the road from a crash: STOP. Help. SHARE THIS WITH YOUR BIKE RACING FRIENDS.

At Gran Fondo Charly Gaul today, a guy crashed on the first descent. It must have been just ahead of me because I was among the first 100. He was badly banged up. I dropped my bike and ran to him. He was bleeding from his neck, mouth, leg and other places. He was conscious, in severe pain and couldn't breath properly. I put my hand on the neck wound to stop the bleeding because it did look like the main artery. I stuck my finger in his throat. In the meantime, I shouted for help. Hundreds rode by. He was lying at a very dangerous spot so it was just a matter of time that someone else crashed there. I was ready to jump into the curb. Sure enough it happened and another rider hit the deck, crashing into him. That guy only suffered some bruises so I put him to work slowing down the other racers while I kept talking to Gregor that he's going to be fine and will be taken care of immediately. It took forever for a doctor to stop. Many must have just ridden by. Finally, a police moto came. It took several more costly minutes for a race doctor to arrive and the ambulance to follow. They immediately ordered a helicopter. I don't know if he survived. I wouldn't bet on it.

I only have basic first aid skills. And, of course, that race was important to me. My three Gran Fondos this summer were crap but I felt good today and was right where I wanted to be on the first climb. I was confident to get a Top50 finish (out 2,000). I think if we are removed from the race situation, we all say we would help. But once the gun goes off, things are apparently different. I think you need to really reinforce this with yourself: "If I see someone in trouble in a race, I help." Next time it could be you fighting to survive.
