$50, 000 for World Record at Ironman Western Australia

Race organizers of the Ironman Western Australia triathlon, IMG, have announced an $AU50, 000 bonus to the first athlete to break the world record at this year’s race on December 2, 2007. The men’s world record, held by Belgium’s Luc Van Lierde is 7:50:27 which he performed at the height of his career in 1997 at Roth. The women’s fastest time, owned by legend Paula Newby-Fraser over the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and run 42.2km run is 8:50:53. Ironman Western Australia is considered an ideal event for elite athletes to attempt to break the world record, as it is a fast, flat course that is wind protected for much of the distance. Many consider Ironman Western Australia to be the fastest Ironman course in the world, which may be a factor in the event attracting a world class field. With the $50,000 bonus on offer for the first time in Western Australia this year, it is expected that many elite athletes will attempt to better the previous world record with such a tempting prize to aim for.
