"First, we have taken a massive blow from which it will take a long time to recover, a blow that negatively affected the balance of deterrence as well as stability in the region.
Second, the military response will include, and is already beginning to include, unprecedented use of force in densely populated areas, which is expected to cause problems later in the international arena.
Third, it’s unclear how much force needs to be used, and for how long, to defeat Hamas in the Gaza Strip and to deter the Lebanon-based Hezbollah for a long period. In fact, the purpose of the operation has not yet been determined. What is Israel trying to achieve: only the denial of Hamas’s military capabilities, or the toppling of the regime in Gaza? The second goal will require the occupation of the Gaza Strip. This is not what past military plans were geared toward.
